Rode the subway today

Rode the subway this morning down to Times Square.  I took 1 picture while we were in the tunnels.  I didn’t want to take too many pictures for fear of irritating someone.  We rode it this morning and then again in the evening on the way back to the apartment.  This was my first experience on a New York subway.  I have to say it’s worse than Max on a bad day. =)  Talk about standing room only.  People are crammed in there so tight that you don’t move much when the train moves.

This was the fewest people we saw all day.

After getting off the subway we walked down to Times Square.  We were actually there twice today.  Once in the morning and again in the evening

Times Square early in the day

Times Square again in the evening.

We got lucky and were able to get into the Empire State building today.  I’m really surprised we didn’t have to wait.  We walked right in and got right on an elevator.

We walked through Macy’s (yes, the Macy’s from Miracle on 34th St).   There was nothing but people for as far as the eye could see.  Once you get up to the third floor  they are still using the original wood escalators.  Kind of neat to see.  I didn’t take any pictures inside the store but did get pictures of the famous Macy’s windows.  keep in mind there is glare from the glass.

Yes, that is an employee still in the window finishing up.

We also went past the Lords and Taylor store.  They had some really neat window displays.

We also went over to Bryant Park.  This is a really neat park and it has a skating rink in the middle of it and full time stores set up around it.   Bryant Park is between the Empire State building and Rockefeller Center,

We decided to catch the subway back by going Grand Central Station.  It’s quite impressive.  All those people moving around in there, it’s kind of crazy.

We have seen quite a bit and it’s only two days into our vacation.   We move on to the museums next.  =)

Wow, you guys are making the best of your time, that’s for sure!

I think the wooden escalators at Macy’s are cool. Bryant Park has (if they still do it) outdoor movies during the summer, kind of like they do in Pioneer Square here.

I’m proud of you for riding the subway!! 🙂

Yeah, it wasn’t as bad as i was thinking it was going to be. I even expected it to be crowded and i was disappointed there. I can’t believe how many people are in this city though.

I might be in traction when we get home from all this walking but I’m going to enjoy every minute of it. Still no snow here even thought they are threatening it a little today. We will wait and see I guess. =)

Awww, I remember Bryant Park from my first visit to NY in 1985! Have you seen/been to Balducci’s yet? LOVE the Empire State Bldg. pictures! Texts confirm that my friend August, who lives in Brooklyn now, did not go to tree lighting either. Like me, she doesn’t like crowds of people and no bathrooms. But she walked by the site on the way to the subway going home tonight! I hope the rest of your trip is great, truly.

Nope haven’t been there. I just looked it up though and it looks really good.

Margo, I would have told you about Balduccis, but when I looked them up before you left to get the address, I saw that they had closed their Manhattan locations. Which is to bad, because it was an awesome place where you could get all kinds of cool food (ostrich steaks!)
